Feldspar can be replaced by other minerals and mineral mixtures of similar physical properties. Minerals that could be used to replace feldspar include pyrophyllite, clays, talc, and feldsparsilica (quartz) mixtures. The abundance of feldspar will make these substitutions unnecessary for the foreseeable future.
Industrial/economical uses: Peridote (a translucent variety of olivine) is considered a 'gem' mineral. Also used as a refractory sand and infrequently as an abrasive.

Common silicate mineral. Responsible for the pink to red colors found in the igneous rock, granite. Common color is salmon, but can be found as a white or pale blueishgreen. A very important historical geology collection, the Joseph Dawson Mineral Collection (see Figs. 1 2), dating from the late 18th century, was donated to Bradford Museums in 1904 by the Bradford Philosophical Society (BPS). Dawson was a founding member of the BPS back in 1808.

Biotite. Biotite is a common phyllosilicate mineral within the mica group. Its approximate chemical formula is K(Mg, Fe) 3 AlSi 3 O 10 (F, OH) 2. This mineral is usually dark green to brown or black. It can be transparent to opaque, has a vitreous to pearly luster, and a graywhite streak.
Regional metamorphism is metamorphism that occurs over broad areas of the crust. Most regionally metamorphosed rocks occur in areas that have undergone deformation during an orogenic event resulting in mountain belts that have since been eroded to expose the metamorphic rocks.
Hornblende schist, for example, is a variety of schist rich in the amphibole mineral hornblende, though the rock may also contain an abundance of plagioclase feldspar and other substances as well. Hornblende, like other members of the amphibole group, is a common rockforming mineral. In fact, hornblende is the most prevalent of all the amphiboles.
